What is multiple sclerosis?
Multiple sclerosis is life-long, affecting the central nervous system. It is often diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40, more commonly affecting women. The cause is widely believed to be a type of immune disorder where the immune system targets the healthy tissue in the central nervous system, interfering with the transmission of signals between the brain, spinal cord, and the rest of the body. Because the central nervous system has such a large impact over bodily functions, multiple sclerosis manifests in a wide range of physical and mental symptoms that differ from person to person.
How does multiple sclerosis begin?
There are typically two ways in which multiple sclerosis starts in patients, in waves of symptoms, known as relapses, or an increasing severity of symptoms, known as progressive.

People with this type of multiple sclerosis will experience relapses, periods of new or worsening symptoms, from days to months at a time, followed by periods of remission, where symptoms ease or disappear completely for a while.
Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis
Affecting 10-20% of patients with MS
Symptoms of multiple sclerosis will accrue and progressively worsen over time. While there will be times where the condition will stabilise, people with this type of multiple sclerosis will not experience periods of remission.
Over a long period of time, typically decades, many people with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis will eventually develop primary progressive multiple sclerosis
Common symptoms of multiple sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis can manifest in a range of different ways, MS symptoms can vary greatly from person to person, which is why a tailored approach to care is the most beneficial.
Common symptoms include:
- Tiredness and fatigue
- Weakness
- Feeling depressed and anxious
- Frequent numbness, tingling or pain
- Muscle spasms and weakness
- Problems with vision
- Bladder and bowel issues

- Sexual problems
- Difficulty with thinking and learning
The combination and severity of these symptoms can change overtime due to the unpredictable nature of the disease. Some symptoms may get progressively worse over time, while others occasionally subside.
